Once more the British Museum are running Art Insight. These are sessions run by artists and art teachers and link specifically with this year’s exam themes. Students are encouraged to research and draw from objects in the museum that link with the theme. Many of our GCSE and A level students went last year and found it really helpful. It’s free and you can drop in at any time on the two days.  Click here for the flyer: A5_ArtInsight flyer_2012

‘Which department was this?’

This was one of the many compliments the students received when their work was exhibited for a two day ‘pop up’ exhibition in the Hockney Gallery at the Royal College of Art. The quality and thoughtfulness of the pieces on display was truly impressive. See images below taken of the work and the space following the exhibition. This was the first time that A level students’ work has been exhibited in this way and it  was a once in a lifetime opportunity for those involved. The work was made following two workshops at the Freud Museum run by Andrew Vallance, a PhD research student at the RCA. He encouraged them to use photographs of unknown family members and to create a piece of work in response to them.

Seven of our AS Art students have been chosen to exhibit their work at the Royal College of Art, following a project they did at the Freud Museum. Their work will be on display this week in the Hockney Gallery space at the Royal College of Art from 11th-13th of January. There will be a private view on Thursday 12th of January 6-8:30pm. Directions to the RCA can be found by clicking here.

Come along next Thursday night to the lower school arts block roof terrace between 5-7 pm for an evening to celebrate the unveiling of Florence the Grey Coat Angel. She was designed and made by Yr 7 & 8 students and was based on the game ‘Consequences’.  The project was led by RCA artist Stuart McCaffer from the Creative Mentors Foundation. For the past two years the Art Department have worked with the Creative Mentors Foundation. They train Royal College of Art graduates in dyslexia awareness and specialist teaching strategies, preparing them to work in schools alongside the existing staff who are engaged in arts teaching. http://creativementors.co.uk/

On Monday 21st November a group of 15 G&T Year 9 students took part in a workshop at the Royal College of art. It was a fantastic day of drawing and exploring ideas about display and curation, with artist Jessie Brennan who came second in this year’s Jerwood Drawing Prize.

The students also had a chance to look at the Secret Postcard exhibition, where artists are asked to produce postcards alongside RCA students and staff which are auctioned off  (the artist is only revealed once the purchase has been made). Within the workshop the students explored what makes an art work valuable, how we judge quality and how display can significantly affect perception of value.

All of the students thoroughly enjoyed the creative freedom they had within the studio and the opportunity to approach drawing in new and exciting ways.

On Monday 7th of November we had a day to celebrate the new arts building. Music, Drama and Art activities were planned with an evening concert.

The Art department ran three different workshops. Stuart McCaffer, our creative mentor ran a sculpture workshop with Yr 7 & 8 students using the game ‘Consequences’ as inspiration. He also later ran a lantern making workshop for Yr 7 students who have been invited to participate in the turning on of the Christmas lights in Victoria.

Yr 12 students enjoyed an all day drawing workshop with artist Paul Brandford using images from newspapers as starting points. The workshop focused upon the development of the participant’s own visual language in relation to the stimulus so the how was just as important as the what. The day moved through phases of instinctive experimentation with both charcoal and ink culminating in more prolonged pieces within which inventive procedures explored earlier are applied.

Below are a mixture of images from the day.
